The Pretender, 2019
Glazed ceramics, handbuilt

The work consists of a boxing glove made of ceramic, hanging from the metal construction in the exhibition space. It addresses the concepts of power, strength and fragility in many terms. The sculpture is a handbuilt sculpture of a slightly smaller version of a boxing glove. A contrast between the fragile sculpture and its big black shadow is visible on the wall. Although the sculpture itself is a fragile and small, the shade points out a big image of “power”. This can be seen as a metaphor of a struggle to look strong at your most vulnerable stage, as a survival strategy. The glove reminds of a punch that is about to break its own shell and this is exactly what would make it dysfunctional as a boxing glove, only destroying itself if it actually tried to attack.
